A New Door for the Dexter House + A GIVEAWAY!

THE DEXTER HOUSE

*this post is sponsored by JELD-WEN (be sure to check out the giveaway at the end of this post!)

Before converting the Dexter house Airbnb to a long-term rental at the end of the summer, we had one lingering project: replacing the bedroom door. Some of you may recall this door as the one that’s given us trouble (who remembers when an Airbnb guest threw a rock through it?!). Well we finally replaced it last month with a JELD-WEN Smooth-Pro Fiberglass door in Sherwin-Williams color of the year, Naval. I knew a new door would function better, but it also gave a whole new feel to the space! And today we’re sharing the new look and giving away a JELD-WEN door to one of you. Be sure to check out the GIVEAWAY at the end of this post!

the Dexter House // JELD-WEN door (in Sherwin Williams’s color of the year, Naval)

With a couple of nights open at the middle of July in our Airbnb calendar, Garrett and I hopped over to Seattle to replace the door. Of course, while we were at it, we gave the backyard a little loving, too. I think the tenant we have coming in September is going to be pleasantly surprised! Here’s what the old door looked like.

The old door was…okay, I’m just going to say it…a cheap fiberglass door from a big box store. The white was starting to discolor as was the sealant from the replaced glass. It looked pretty tired and in need of some love. Also the existing door was an outswing because we thought it would function well here, but it turned out to be kind of annoying and didn’t buy as much space as we thought inside the room. So for the new door we went with an inswing. Much better!

Another upgrade with this door is internal blinds. Privacy is important in a bedroom in a house in the middle of Seattle with neighbors everywhere you look. The integrated blinds are a really convenient feature especially now that the door is inswing, layers of curtains aren’t getting in the way.

Okay, let’s talk about the color! It came prefinished in Sherwin-Williams color of the year, Naval. It’s a deep, rich blue that we first used it in the 6 Day Kitchen Reno. We loved it then and we love it now. It’s absolutely striking against the 100-year-old brick of the Dexter House.

Our new door is from a JELD-WEN Smooth-Pro Fiberglass ¾ View 1-Panel door in Sherwin-Williams color of the year, Naval, and we were immediately impressed with the quality (so much better than the one from the big box store). We opted for the ¾ View 1-Panel  but there are over a hundred different styles to choose from. One really cool feature is that these come primed so you can paint to match with standard exterior paint. The durability of fiberglass with the simplicity of paint!
