Our Biggest Regret from the Farmhouse Garden Remodel + The Floor Plan

THE FARMHOUSE

It’s hard to believe our garden is only one year old! But this Spring marks just one year since we started building out this space in the existing deer fence on our property. The garden become such a big part of how we live at the Farmhouse. And for the record, we LOVE how it turned out - we basically live out here in the warmer months. But we did make one mistake when building this space. So today I wanted to share a plan of the garden and talk about what we wish we had done differently…

I took some new photos of the garden over the weekend. We’re early in the growing season here in eastern Washington (we’re in zone 6b and our last frost date isn’t until early/mid May), but things are starting to green up. Pretty soon this space will be lush and teeming with life and I can’t wait! Before we get into what we wish we had done differently in the garden, here are a few posts from last year that you might find useful…

The garden plan

We’ve never shared a plan of this space before, but I thought it would be helpful in understanding how the space is laid out and how it all flows together. Plus it should give you more context around what we’re regretting about this space, which we’re sharing below.

We pulled our patio furniture out last week and of course it promptly rained. Ha! We’ve really loved having outdoor furniture out here. It took this space from a garden to an outdoor living space.

our biggest regret

Our biggest regret in this space - not enough garden beds. There’s simply not enough room to grow all the vegetables, berries, and flowers that we want to. We built five raised garden boxes for this space, each measuring about 4’x8’, and the raspberries have an in-ground bed, which is about 28’x3’, but that just doesn’t cut it. I wish we had narrowed up the walkways in-between the beds and snuck in another couple of raised beds.

We’re hoping to fix this problem later this Spring, but in the meantime, we brought in two tall planters that Garrett’s dad built about a decade ago (shown in the next photo), plus we have some other planters for overflow gardening. It’ll do for now, but a more permanent solution is hopefully coming.

Excited to share more of this space as it greens up this Spring! And for those wanting more context on where this garden sits, I’m including two more photos. The first is looking back at the house. And the second is a look at the new chicken coop we’re building just outside the garden fence.

I’d also like to up my flower-pot game in the future (like my friend Chloe did here). Flowers bring bees and butterflies and add so much color and life to the garden! One thing we don’t regret - the string lights (we never did put out a DIY, but check out Aniko’s post for something similar).
