Holiday Crafting :: Wallpaper Baubles!

THE FARMHOUSE

It’s that time of year when my crafting goes into over drive! I make holiday paper stars and dry oranges and decorate cookies and collect all the wallpaper samples I ordered over the year to make a fresh batch of homemade ornaments, aka wallpaper baubles. This year I had some really great wallpaper samples to work with - mostly Morris & Co - and they turned into my favorite baubles yet! Check out the tutorial below.

I’ve shared a DIY for these in the past, but I like this year’s better so am sharing an updated tutorial below. My kids helped me with this batch and we’re still at it - trying to craft enough to cover an entire little teeny-tiny mini tree by the time December 1st comes around ;)

BTW you could technically make this with any kind of heavy paper, but I love the patterns and textures the wallpaper adds. Plus it’s a great way to recycle all those samples and keep something beautiful out of the garbage.

DIY Wallpaper Baubles

Wallpaper cut into 9 strips of 0.5” x 10”

Wood beads (I used one 8mm and one 20mm for each bauble)

ribbon

floral wire

scissors, paper cutter, wire cutters, needle

Step 1 :: Poke 3 holes in each strip of paper - one at the middle, and one about 1/4” away from each end. Each strip should have the holes in the exact same spot, or as close as you can get to exact.

Step 2 :: Cut a piece of floral wire about 10” long. Slide the small wood bead onto it about 1” from the end. Wrap the wire around the bead and then around itself to secure the end. Slip the larger bead on next, if you’re using two.

Step 3 :: Lay the wallpaper out so the pattern aligns, then slide the slips onto the floral wire, good side towards the beads, making sure to keep them in order.

Step 4 :: Now we get to make the bauble! Take the bottom strip of paper and curve the end up to the top of the metal wire and poke the wire through the hole you made at that end. Do the same for the other end of the bottom strip of paper. Repeat with each strip of paper, working clockwise and always adding both sides of the strip before moving on to the next piece of paper.

Step 5 :: Once all nine slips of paper are attached, loop the top of the metal wire around itself to make a loop and secure the top. Cut off the excess wire.

Step 6 :: Tie a length of ribbon onto the loop to create a hanger.

Note: these baubles hold up well from year to year. I store mine in a plastic bag in our holiday bin from January - November.

Fun, right?! Happy holiday crafting!
