Steel Patio Door Dreams

THE DEXTER HOUSE We cut in a new exterior door opening on Sunday.  It leads from from the master suite to the backyard patio.  The opening was actually already half there, since we just expanded an existing window opening, but my goodness, cutting out that brick was a dusty job!

Garrett and Papa used an angle-grinder with various attachments to cut through the exterior wall.  One thing we found out during the process is that our exterior walls are a bit wonky.   They are constructed of 4" masonry block on the interior, then there's ~1" gap and then a running-bond brick wall on the exterior.  This is our first brick house, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but certainly not that.  And after speaking with a structural engineer, it sounds like this is a pretty uncommon wall detail for residential construction.

But back to the door.  I'd love to put in a steel door, a trend I'm obsessed with at the moment.  Something like one of these would fit the bill:

Unfortunately a steel door is not in the budget at Dexter House.  We ended up ordering an out-swing, glass patio door at Home Depot - a budget-friendly, nice-looking alternative to my dream door.  I can' wait to show it to you once the installation is complete!
