Adding Custom Marble Details to the Kids Bathroom

THE FARMHOUSE

When we bought the vanity for the kids bathroom it came with a backsplash and we knew we’d add one. Because splash protection in a kids bathroom with wallpaper just seemed wise. Plus we saw the backsplash as an opportunity to add a crafted detail in here for a little whimsy and a little classical nod. So we headed to our favorite Seattle stone shop and brought home a remnant of marble and Garrett got busy. Have a look…

The vanity top came with the vanity but the rest of the marble in here was cut from the remnant we picked up at Allied Marble and Granite in Seattle. It was about 2.5’x3.5’ and turned out to be plenty of material for the backsplash, side splash, a shower shelf, and 2 shelves next to the vanity. Pretty good deal for $300!

Garrett cut all of the marble in this bathroom (minus the vanity top which came with the vanity). It’s a skill he taught himself over the years and fearlessly tried during the 2-week Porch House kitchen remodel for the first time.

For the kids’ bathroom backsplash, I requested curves, just like we did in our pantry. The two of us drew out a template on cardboard and then Garrett traced it onto the marble and cut it using an angle grinder with a diamond blade and a wet polisher. Here’s a peek at what that process looks like (for those of you interested in more detail on the process, I saved lots of videos in my IG highlight ‘diy backsplash’).

I’m so incredibly pleased with how this backsplash turned out! It’ll give the wallpaper some much needed protection and it’s just so dang cute :)

An awkward nook next to the vanity turned out to be the perfect spot for some extra storage. We opted for a marble shelf and added an outlet for charging toothbrushes and what not. A second marble shelf will get installed half way between the existing shelf and the bottom of the sconce.

Oh and here’s one of my favorite details of the whole bathroom…the mini curve Garrett added to the sidesplash!

We also had enough marble for a shelf in the shower. This will be where the shampoo/condition/soap live (and hopefully not the perch where the kids cannon ball into the bathtub ;). The marble is a nice touch in here and ties into the vanity nicely IMO .

Next up we’re going to glue all the marble into place and then finally address the millwork. Eek! We’re getting so close to finishing this bathroom!!
