What's Inside our New Natural Mattress...

THE FARMHOUSE

We try to keep our home as natural as possible. Whenever selecting products for renovations or decorating projects we opt for real materials made by the earth like wool and wood and we avoid heavily processed and manufactured products whenever possible. Why? Well we like the look and feel of natural elements, but even more important, natural products usually don’t contain the harmful chemical additives used to make synthetic materials. And we want our home to be as healthy as it is beautiful.

Let’s talk mattresses…

Now that our bathroom remodel is done (and our closet is close!) we gave our adjacent bedroom a good cleanout and cleanup last month. We dusted every surface. We emptied HVAC filters. We vacuumed underneath furniture. And then we opened up the windows to air out that leftover construction-debris-air (iykyk). It was the perfect time to switch our synthetic foam mattress out for a healthier one. And the team at TFS Natural Home helped us find the perfect natural, organic, and comfortable mattress for our bedroom.

Let me back up for a second. Did you know that a lot of conventional and foam mattresses are full of chemicals like Formaldehyde, benzene and other volatile organic compounds, and flame retardants. With Garrett’s background in biochemistry, it’s always something he keeps an eye out for. In fact, when our first baby was born almost a decade ago, he insisted we find a latex and coconut fiber crib mattress (no small feat at the time) so we could be sure he’d be sleeping on a surface free of chemical fire retardants. Since then, we’ve had a mix of conventional spring and foam mattresses in our home and they’ve all been fine as far as comfort but they’ve all had some degree of added chemicals.

SO this time around, we looked for a mattress 100% free of added chemicals. Thankfully ALL of the TFS Natural Home’s mattresses are, so that made selecting one easy! Garrett and I went down to their beautiful new Seattle showroom and tried out every single mattress, laying on some for awkwardly long (they didn’t mind 😉) and just really appreciating their beautiful historic store (it’s worth a visit if you’re in Seattle!).

Eventually we decided on the Royal Luxury mattress + topper. You won’t believe what’s in this thing…

Yup, those are layers of camel hair, horsetail, organic latex, micro coils, and hemp coir. Wild, right (you can read more about those here?! They’re all wrapped up in an organic cotton casing with a sturdy zipper. All sustainable, eco-friendly materials that are 100% free of chemicals and designed to last. To complement our natural mattress we added a cashmere, horsetail, and wool blend mattress topper and an organic cotton sheet set. The end result is a healthy, sustainable, and restful night sleep!

Mattress + topper, cotton sheet set

A few stats for those as careful as Garrett…our Royal Luxury organic mattress is 11” deep (16” with the topper), 100% chemical free, Oekotex certified latex, GOTS certified organic cotton fabric, and has a 10-15 year life. The mattress size is completely customizable and assembled in their San Francisco factory.

We’ve slept on this mattress for a couple of weeks now and it’s incredibly comfortable. It feels a bit like we’re cocooned in organic luxury and we honestly can’t say enough great things about our mattress and bedding from The Futon Shop.

Thanks to the Futon Shop for creating such planet and health-conscious products and getting us a wonderful night sleep! Here’s a link to all of their mattresses for anyone in the market.
