All the Lighting We Picked for the Farmhouse Exterior

THE FARMHOUSE

Earlier this Spring we debated about lighting for the Farmhouse exterior and so many of you weighed in and helped us make up our minds! Today I wanted to share what we ultimately picked and where everything is going plus a few other updates we have planned. Let’s get into it…

The Farmhouse has always been beautiful, but it was a bit worn when we bought it in 2016. We’ve since given it a simple white paint job, laid a cobblestone paver walkway, done some landscaping and now we’re finally addressing the lighting and adding a few touches to the front porch and side entrances.

Here’s what we’re thinking…

finishes

Here are the finishes we’re planning to use at the entrances…

terracotta pots, whicker loveseat, pillow, hedgehog boot scraper, copper sconce, house numbers, Wildwood sconce, Wildwood semi-flush light, screen door, woven doormat, indoor/outdoor rug, striped door mat

The lighting we picked (are you surprised?)

After all that debating, we picked the copper finish for the wall light I’d been planning on using. Garrett really loved the black and copper finish, but a few of you mentioned that the black might clash with the green window sashes and I wholeheartedly agreed. So we went with the copper for a classic red-ish and green color combo. I think the shiny copper lights and satin Laurel Wood green sashes are going to look stunning together!

Are you surprised to see other lighting fixtures on this roundup? A couple people commented that the industrial-style copper sconces didn’t feel fancy enough for the Farmhouse’s front porch and after chewing it over, I agreed. So we picked out these super cute fixtures from Rejuvenation for the more formal entrance at the front door and reinforced the casual and functional nature of the other doors with the copper sconce. At least that’s what I’m going for.

I wanted to show you what that all looks like at each entrance. Let’s start with the East door…

The East entrance (mudroom/backyard)

The East door leads from the mudroom to the backyard and is the main in-and-out. We added a screen door last year and here’s what we’re tackling now…

  • add a small cedar landing and steps in place of the crumbling concrete stairs

  • replace the sconce with a copper sconce

  • remove the defunct overhead fixture

The West Entrance (laundry room)

The west entrance came with concrete stairs but no lighting or handrails. Here’s what we’re planning to do…

  • Add cedar handrails

  • Add cedar treds and risers to the existing concrete stairs

  • Add copper sconce

the front porch

The front porch is already pretty great but we’re adjusting the lighting here and adding some nice finishes. Here’s the plan…

  • Swap the overhead light for a Wildwood semi-flush

  • Add Wildwood sconces on either side of the door

  • Bring in greenery in pots

That’s the plan! Did you vote for the copper finish?
