Happy Friday 5/27/22

Happy Friday! How are you? It’s been a heavy couple of weeks (months? years?) in the news and our hearts are with the victims’ families. Posting about home remodels and design trends feels completely trivial in the face of it, but this blog has always been an escape for me and I know some of us are looking for that right now. I hope you find what you need. Wishing you a peaceful Memorial Day weekend.

On a positive note, this week marked the first of our Spring lilacs. I’ve been waiting 11.5 months for these and they did not disappoint! Not even a rough winter and a freakishly-cold spring could keep our 18-or-so bushes from blooming. In fact, they might be more beautiful for it. I feel like there’s a metaphor there…

Here are some links from the week…

I couldn’t love this 500sf cottage any more!!! A bit on the design approach: “When Ana Perez set out to decorate the tiny cottage situated in the backyard of her family’s Norfolk, England, home, she came up with a novel idea (literally). Rather than simply plucking out random items she liked, she imagined it belonged to a gardener. That explains the open shelves in the kitchen—reminiscent of a potting shed—the palette of terracotta browns and forest greens, the zinc-clad countertop, and the framed butterflies.” (domino)

Made me laugh. (@cupofjo)

The two choices that keep a midlife crisis at bay. Really loved this. “Midlife is the point at which your medium of choice should change from a canvas to a sculpture, in which the work of art appears as a result of chipping away, not adding.” (theatlantic)

I’m here for this fashion trend: color is in. (@vogue)

I made my own pleated lampshades for a couple of thrifted lamps (more on that soon) and they are so fun. I ended up doing my own thing, but here’s a great tutorial that looks a bit easier ;) (create-enjoy)

How cool is this: a couple’s summer kitchen in a former lobster shack. (remodelista)

We shared the saga that is the Poplar Cottage this week. We’re finally making some progress!

How to hang pictures at home. “hanging pictures, much like painting them, is a balancing act of spacing, colour and proportion. After all, the way art is displayed is crucial and transformative.” (houseandgarden)

What’s old is new again! Loved this chair makeover from my ever-inspiring friend Ashley. (@thegoldhive)

Thinking about the Uvalde School shooting and the Buffalo shooting. If you’re able/interested in joining us, we’re donating to Mom’s Demand Action and Everytown. (cupofjo, Elle)

Hope you have a good one!
